Anyone who knows me knows I’m allergic to many products, foods, and medications. This has forced me to look towards more natural based products and concoctions for everyday use. Most store-bought haircare and skincare products I can’t use without terrible effects on my skin and scalp. One of my favorite things to use is a DIY hair rinse of my own creation, that not only treats dandruff, it moisturizes the hair, promotes hair growth, and has even made sebaceous cysts disappear.
The recipe consists of three ingredients: Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Emu Oil, & Manuka Oil.
Through my personal experience, I now swear by these three ingredients. I had dry scalp so severe that it caused bleeding and scabs to form. Nothing store-bought or medicated said to treat dandruff helped. Since using this rinse and my custom shampoos, which I’ll discuss later, my scalp has healed and I no longer suffer from embarrassing dandruff.
But that’s not the only benefit of this amazing DIY hair rinse. I also suffered from sebaceous cysts on my scalp, that before using this rinse, I was one step away from seeing a dermatologist for removal. One of them had grown so large, I could barely hide it with my hair. And the hair on and around the cyst was falling out, leaving a bald spot.
There’s nothing sexy about a head full of lumps and dandruff that’s also balding. I was fed up with my scalp problems when I started researching natural solutions. That’s when I found these three natural products and combined them into my special rinse.
How can these simple ingredients do all these great things? Well, let’s take a look at each one individually.
Organic Apple Cider Vinegar: ACV has natural antifungal and antiseptic properties. Because of this, it is effective in controlling the yeast and bacteria that can cause dandruff. It’s also slightly acidic, which can help in balancing the PH levels of your scalp and skin, but that’s not all. Since ACV is fermented, it contains beneficial cultures, vitamins, and minerals. ACV is made up of acetic, lactic, citric, and malic acids, which makes it a great remedy for breaking down the excessive oil buildup that causes sebaceous cysts. Its antifungal and antiseptic properties aid in keeping the skin on and around the cyst clean.
Emu Oil: Aboriginals have used Emu Oil for ages to treat many ailments and conditions. It’s a product that by itself deserves a place in your medicine cabinet. The chemical composition of emu oil is the closest you can get to the natural oils found on human skin. That makes it highly absorbent and gives it the ability to penetrate into the deepest layers of your skin. The Omegas 3, 6, 7 & 9 and Vitamins A, D, E, F and K2 contained in emu oil make it a fantastic moisturizer for skin and hair without the oily residue left behind. Some studies have found that emu oil can produce an approximately 20% increase in healthy skin cell production and an 80 percent increase in healthy hair growth. It’s shown significant hair growth with hair loss caused by dormant follicles, making it a potential treatment for baldness. It also contains antimicrobial properties and can reduce swelling and irritation, making it helpful in treating cuts and scrapes and sore muscles and joints. I’m including the link below for more information on the different conditions that can benefit from the use of emu oil. When purchasing emu oil, it’s important that it is properly refined before use. In the United States, I always look for an oil that is AEA certified. The certification ensures the manufacturer properly refined the product and that it comes from ethical sources. Since emu oil comes from the emu bird, the AEA certification assures that the oil is harvested from birds already being used for meat and not being killed for only its oil.
Manuka Oil: Manuka oil is also an antimicrobial. It contains more antioxidants than tea tree oil and is less irritating. Like the previous two ingredients, manuka oil helps fight dandruff by killing bacteria, fungus, and yeast. Unlike ACV, which if overused can cause dryness, manuka oil moisturizes and leaves your hair smelling fresh for days. With all essential oils, it’s important to buy quality oils to ensure their potency. My favorite is produced by Gya Labs and found on major online retailers
Instructions: Combine the following in a squirt bottle or any pourable container. Use once a week (recommended) or bi-weekly.
1 cup of warm water
½ cup of Apple Cider Vinegar (You can adjust the level of ACV lower for your first use to a ¼ cup and work your way up.)
1-2 dime-sized drops of Emu Oil
2-4 drops of Manuka Oil
Shake well and set aside. Wash your hair with your chosen shampoo and rinse. I use Functions of Beauty custom conditioner and shampoo. It’s sulfate and paraben free and crafted for your specific hair type and needs. If you want more information, you can click the link below for more information and 25% off your first order. It seems pricey, but my bottles last about 6 months with use of two to three times a week. Your usage would depend on different factors.
Next, apply Clarity’s DIY Miracle Hair Rinse, and comb through with a wide-tooth comb. Let the solution set for 15 to 30 minutes. I find 15 minutes enough for me. This part might sting if you have an irritated scalp or minor cuts from scratching your head. The stinging or burning should fade within a minute. If it continues to sting or burn, rinse it out immediately. It should not continue to sting or burn for long. Continued irritation might mean you are allergic to an ingredient or that you need to further dilute the solution with water.
After about 15 minutes, rinse the solution out of your hair. Apply conditioner as usual. I recommend also combing the conditioner through your hair with a wide-tooth comb. Let the conditioner set and then rinse.
Dry and style as usual.
I repeat this process once a week and don’t use heat to dry my hair. Using the combination of these products keeps my hair healthy, shiny, and manageable. The Manuka Oil in this solution leaves a fresh scent that lasts until my next wash.
Try it for yourself and let me know what you think!
